Umno 'letter of undertaking' triggers MACC probe, police report lodged

The viral “Aku Janji” (letter of undertaking) that allegedly asked Umno’s 15th general election (GE15) candidates to back BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamid as premier has caught the MACC's attention.

Separately, a police report has been lodged denying the veracity of the letter.

According to The Star, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the graft busters have opened an investigation paper after reports were lodged on the matter.

The letter of undertaking is allegedly a document that Umno candidates had to sign if they want to contest in GE15.

Among the undertakings in the purported document include pledges to support Zahid as premier, to cease all investigations into party leaders and support government formation with any other party.

There is also a pledge to support the appointment of Umno and BN members to positions in government agencies.

Probe underway

Azam said investigations would be carried out under Section 23 of the MACC Act for abuse of power.

Under the Act - soliciting, accepting and offering gratification is also a criminal offence under Section 16 of the law.

Among the definitions of gratification under the Act, are any office, or form of employment, as well as protection from any penalty, or criminal or civil proceedings.

Meanwhile, incumbent Lenggong MP Shamsul Annuar Nasarah’s political secretary has lodged a police report over the document.

They want the police to investigate the falsification and spread of the letter.

Shamsul and various BN candidates have claimed that the letter of undertaking is fake.
