Nomination delayed in Tenom, tear gas fired

GE15 | Tear gas was fired at the nomination centre used for the Tenom election in Sabah today.

Earlier today, video clips depicting Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (PKDM) supporters trying to force entry into the nomination centre surfaced.

Police reacted by firing tear gas within the vicinity of Dewan Datuk Seri Panglima Antanom.

It is understood that PKDM supporters were not satisfied with the outcome of the nomination process.

One PKDM leader allegedly goaded party supporters into entering the nomination centre.

The returning officer for Tenom finally announced at 2pm that he received six application forms but only read out the names of five candidates for the parliamentary constituency.

The five are incumbent Norita Sual (Pakatan Harapan), Ukin Buandi (Warisan), Ridhuan Rubin (Independent), Jamawi Jaafar (BN) and Peggy Chaw Zhi Ting (Independent).

It is understood that the person who was rejected as a candidate was PKDM president and Melalap assemblyperson Peter Anthony.

In May, Anthony was found guilty of falsifying documents. He was sentenced to three years in jail and fined RM50,000. He is appealing the decision.

Police report

In a press conference later, Sabah police commissioner Idris Abdullah laid out the chronology of what happened at the nomination centre this morning.

He said about 300 of Anthony’s supporters tried to storm the nomination centre due to their dissatisfaction after the PKDM president’s nomination was rejected by the Election Commission (EC).

“A discussion was held between the lawyer representing Anthony, the EC officer, and representatives from the police so that a decision can be made and also to ensure the supporters do not act wildly and obey the instructions from the security team,” Idris said.

He noted that Anthony lodged a police report afterwards over the rejection of his nomination for the Tenom constituency.

By 2.38pm, Idris said the situation at the nomination centre was under control and the rowdy supporters had dispersed.

Anthony earlier said he will challenge the EC’s decision to reject his nomination in court on Monday (Nov 7).
