Choose capable and honest reps, NGOs say
"It is also an avenue where we remove candidates who are selfish, abuse their powers and are corrupt.
Three NGOs have reminded voters that the 15th general election (GE15) is a platform for the rakyat to choose leaders who are competent, honest and trustworthy.
"It is also an avenue where we remove candidates who are selfish, abuse their powers and are corrupt.
“If you choose not to vote, you’re letting the unqualified and incompetent lead the country," said the KL and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH), Pertubuhan Ikram Malaysia (Ikram) and the LLG Cultural Development Centre (LLG Centre) in a joint statement.
They called on all voters to come out and vote, adding it was the people’s shared responsibility to elect the best representatives for the country.
"The rakyat should scrutinise the qualifications and capability of the candidates based on their backgrounds and track records," they said.
The NGOs called on the people to prioritise three qualities when casting their votes, which are as follows:
Capability
A leader must possess the ability to carry out his duty well and with calibre. A leader who is capable and influential will be able to produce even more leaders under his or her stewardship.
Trustworthiness and accountability
It is of utmost importance that a leader can be held true to his word. His words must be in line with his behaviour and actions. Trust is not demanded but built and earned by one’s track record and past efforts.
Honesty
Honesty is essential to building people’s confidence in a leader. Slander, unfulfilled promises, self-serving ploys and deceit are not befitting of an honest leader.
The NGOs said, "Only capable, trustworthy and honest individuals can lead Malaysia to become a country which is harmonious, developed and well-respected by others.

“And we hope the rakyat will unite behind such figures and support and share their leadership’s ideas and aspirations," said the NGOs.
They also called on electoral candidates and political parties to adhere to principles to ensure a fair and clean election.
“Leaders should also convey opinions which are beneficial to the country’s development, avoid commenting on religious issues and stop inciting racial sentiments,” they stated.
