'Compared to Rafizi, I'm way poorer' - Saarani says 

Similar to contesting candidates from opposition parties who have declared their assets, Perak Barisan Nasional (BN) chairperson Saarani Mohamad said it wouldn’t be a problem for him to make such a public declaration.

However, Saarani pointed out that the declaration of assets is not made necessary by the Election Commission.

“Not a problem (to declare assets). We’re not that rich. If compared to Rafizi (Ramli), I’m way poorer. If you compare me with Nga Kor Ming or Ngeh Koo Ham, I’m still poorer,” quipped the outgoing Perak menteri besar.

Saarani (above) said this at a press conference after launching the Perak BN manifesto at Taman Permai Meru in Ipoh, Perak, last night. 

“Therefore, I’m not worried if it’s only to make such declarations. I have no problem with it.”

PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli became the first Pakatan Harapan candidate to declare his assets publicly on Nov 2, ahead of the 15th general election (GE15).

The Pandan parliamentary seat candidate, who declared he has RM18,851,350 in net assets as of Oct 31 this year, was taken to task where there is a significant rise in the value of his start-up Invoke Solutions.

PKR and PSM have required their candidates contesting in the national polls to declare their assets. 

Most of PKR’s 72 candidates for GE15 have declared their assets, with PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail being the latest.

Saarani said it’s understandable that some candidates might find it difficult to declare their assets, citing safety issues involving their families.

“Some don’t want to declare as they are worried for the safety of their families, children and grandchildren. But if it’s made mandatory, I don’t have a problem with it.

“It’s suspense, waiting for Anwar, his wife and family who have yet to announce (their assets).”
