EC should decide now on polling hours of flood-prone seats - Nurul Izzah

GE15 | PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar has urged the Election Commission to decide now whether to extend the voting hours at flood-prone constituencies.

She said this will help voters and candidates to prepare and plan to manage the voting process.

Nurul Izzah said this during a media conference held at Yayasan Aman in Penanti, Pakatan Harapan’s Permatang Pauh election machinery headquarters.

Also present were Harapan’s Nibong Tebal candidate Fadhlina Sidek and Harapan’s Bayan Baru candidate Sim Tze Tzin.

“Last-minute decisions will create difficulties for voters and the candidates as it will be too late for them to make contingency plans.

“This is in flood-prone constituencies, where the voting centres, particularly the schools, could be underwater,” she added.

“This is not Umno or BN’s country. This is Malaysia and the Election Commission must make its own decision and not be influenced by Umno and BN,” she added.

She said the EC can extend polling hours until 9pm or until midnight or the next day.

“But, don’t handicap others by making last-minute decisions, it is going to create a lot of inconveniences for everyone,” she added

Nurul Izzah also expressed her disappointment at EC’s decision to meet tomorrow to decide the status of Padang Serai after Harapan’s candidate for the seat died, saying the commission should have met immediately instead.

Nurul Izzah added there is overwhelming support for the Harapan candidates in Nibong Tebal and Balik Pulau.

She also appealed to outstation voters to return home to cast their votes to ensure that Harapan forms the new government post-GE15.

Voters should also be cautious of parties using racial and religious issues to campaign, she added.
