Incumbent Tanah MP denies offering money for outstation voters

Incumbent Tanah Merah MP Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz has denied claims on social media that he was offering between RM350 and RM1,000 for outstation voters to return and vote.

"The claims are untrue as no payment was made. I keep seeing different versions (of the amount) I’m allegedly paying outside voters.

"These (the messages) are an attempt to instigate people to hate me, especially outside voters returning to Tanah Merah to cast their ballots," Ikmal Hisham, who is also deputy defence minister, told reporters in Tanah Merah.

The messages, which are circulated mainly on WhatsApp, claim that RM500 of the payment is to be made at Ikmal Hisham's office in Keramat and the rest would be paid later.

Meanwhile, Ikmal Hisham, who is from Bersatu, admitted to discussing with the Election Commission (EC) regarding providing "assistance" to voters who are returning to their hometowns to vote.

According to him, the EC agreed to it, provided the "assistance" is not an inducement to vote for any particular party.

"It is just transport fare. We have yet to decide on the matter," he said.

In GE15, Ikmal Hisham will be defending the seat against Mohd Supardi Md Noor from PKR, Mohd Bakri Mustapha (BN), Gerakan Tanah Air's Mohd Nasir Abdullah, and independent candidate Nik Sapeia Nik Yusof.
