We may be few, but our crusade continues - Dr M to his voters

Following a crushing defeat in the 15th general election, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has written to his voters in the Langkawi parliamentary seat to tell them that their crusade is real although their numbers are small.

Mahathir, who only garnered 4,566 votes in the general election, said his Pejuang party and GTA coalition were laid aside because they remained steadfast in their crusade.

“I hope that you don’t feel too sad and demotivated to continue our struggle for our nation, religion and also our country,” he said in the letter posted on Twitter.

In the just concluded GE15, the two-time prime minister was defending the Langkawi seat in a five-cornered fight.

Tasting defeat after 54 years, the nonagenarian came in fourth and lost his election deposit.

GTA was also wiped out as all 168 of its candidates, including Mahathir’s son Mukhriz in Jerlun, lost their deposits.

Since he did not know the identity of those who voted for him, Mahathir said he wrote them this open letter to convey his gratitude for their bravery.

“Although I may not know each and every one of you, I feel very honoured for the spirit, courage and rejection towards corruption by those who voted for me, representing Pejuang/GTA.”
