While the 15th general election has resulted in a hung Parliament, voters sent a clear message to many of the biggest names in the nation’s political arena.
The country's longest-serving premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad suffered a crushing defeat in Langkawi where he finished fourth in a five-cornered fight.
In a shocking loss, the seat was won by Perikatan Nasional's Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah by 13,518, according to the Election Commission.
Langkawi was known to be the veteran politician’s pet project when he was prime minister, heavily investing in the island and turning it into an international tourism destination.
At 97, it is surely the Pejuang chairperson’s last electoral contest, with him previously saying this when announcing his candidacy in October:
“I won’t be around for GE16.”
His son Mukhriz suffered a similar fate. The former Kedah menteri besar lost the parliamentary seat of Jerlun, where he had been serving since 2018 after PN won the seat yesterday with a 20,456-vote majority.
Mahathir's one-time nemesis Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah saw his long reign of 48 years as Gua Musang MP come crashing down.

Unlike the whopping defeat of Pejuang giants Mahathir and son, victory slipped through Tengku Razaleigh’s fingers as the PN candidate Mohd Azizi Abu Naim won by a razor-thin 163-vote majority.
Elsewhere, former PKR leaders who defected during the Sheraton Move, Azmin Ali and Zuraida Kamaruddin were sent packing by voters in Gombak and Ampang. Azmin lost to former protege Amirudin Shari in Gombak by 12,729 votes while Zuraida also suffered the indignity of losing her deposit, losing heavily to PKR's Rodziah Ismail.
Caretaker health minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who announced his intentions of cleansing his party Umno, and being premier in the future, lost to PKR's R Ramanan in Sungai Buloh who bagged 50,943 votes to secure a majority of 2,693.

Caretaker finance minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz was similarly shown the door in Kuala Selangor by incumbent Dzulkefly Ahmad from Pakatan Harapan ended the fight with 31,033 votes and a slim majority of 1,002 over Zafrul’s 30,031 votes.
Harapan heroes also defeated
It wasn't all smooth sailing for PKR with shocking defeats for ‘Puteri Reformasi’ Nurul Izzah Anwar in Permatang Pauh, as she surrendered the seat to PN candidate Muhammad Fawwaz Mat Jan who won with a 5,272 majority.
The party's secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, former Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh and former education minister Maszlee Malik also suffered losses in their seats.

In Batu, PKR incumbent P Prabakaran - who has served the parliamentary seat since 2018 - won handsomely over his nine opponents, who included PN’s Azhar Yahya (23,475 votes) and MIC vice-president A Kohilan Pillay (10,398 votes) as well as former party colleague Tian Chua - who had gone rogue contesting as an independent candidate in the seat and garnered a meagre 4,603 votes.

Sepang voters also facilitated the thrashing of Bersatu's Rina Harun, while Mahadzir Khalid and Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor were also defeated, the latter being knocked out by PN's Mohd Radzi Md Jidin.
Elsewhere, Sungai Siput witnessed the defeat of current MIC party president S Vigneswaran to PKR’s S Kesavan - who won by a slim majority of 1,846 votes, while former MCA leader Liow Tiong Lai lost to Young Syefura Othman in Bentong.
