PM rejects new Mercedes S600 official car

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has declined the use of a Mercedes S600 luxury vehicle purchased for office use, for the sake of prudence.

Taking to Facebook, the Tambun MP-elect wrote last night that he rejected the vehicle, purchased and acquired by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) before he took office, yesterday.

“The step was taken because I don’t want any form of new expenses accrued in my name.

“Instead, I have decided to use whatever vehicle is available in the office for daily use,” he wrote.

Later today, Anwar revealed to reporters that he was able to cancel the order of the luxury vehicle before it was sent out for delivery.

"(I can) use any car that is available. Actually, this (Mercedes) was ordered by the previous prime minister. I checked if I could still cancel (the booking), and I managed to do that," he said.

He did not name which prime minister had ordered the vehicle. Anwar merely pointed to his Toyota Camry and asked reporters if it was "okay" to use.

Speaking at a thanksgiving ceremony (majlis kesyukuran) at a mosque in Sungai Long, Kajang, last night, the PKR president, who was appointed to the country’s highest office last week, said that no new official car will be purchased for his use, nor will any renovations be carried out at his office, in order to not waste government funds.

He had previously said that tackling the cost of living would be his priority as premier and vowed to not accept the prime minister’s salary, only accepting the allowance paid to MPs.
