Umno AGM postponed to January

The Umno annual national delegates assembly has been postponed.

It was originally scheduled for Dec 21 to Dec 24. The new dates are Jan 11 to Jan 14 next year.

This was announced by Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan last night on his social media accounts.

“The initial dates were during the school holidays and many delegates had already planned their holidays.

“Therefore, our AGM will be postponed,” he said.

Ahmad said an official notification would be sent out to party delegates soon.

The Umno AGM will be a closely watched event because the party is a key component of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government.

Several top Umno leaders have objected to being part of the federal government because of the party’s “no Anwar, no DAP” policy.

As the top decision-making body of Umno, the delegates’ assembly could potentially reverse the leadership’s decision to be part of the government.

What is confirmed is that the party leadership will table a proposal to amend the party constitution in view of new “anti-hopping” laws.

Several parties have already amended their constitutions to allow for the removal of rogue party members in a way that will trigger the law that prohibits party-hopping by elected representatives.
