Fact-check: Fake account behind UEC recognition post by 'Anwar'

The Prime Minister's Department today clarified that a viral post claiming to be a statement from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Twitter was actually published by a fake account.

The fake post states that the government would recognise the United Examination Certificate (UEC).

The post was made by an account with the handle @anwarinrahim.

Besides the single-letter difference, the account appears identical to the PM's official Twitter account, @anwaribrahim.

Malaysiakini's checks found the fake account no longer exists on Twitter.

"The public is urged not to spread or share false information or which veracity is unclear.

"Not sure? Don't share!" the PMD said on Facebook.

It also shared links to Anwar's official social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok.

The UEC is a standardised examination for Chinese independent high schools in Malaysia.

The UEC is not recognised by the government for tertiary education admission - but is accepted by universities in many other countries including the United Kingdom, the US and Singapore.

In its election manifesto, Pakatan Harapan promised to accept the UEC for public university admission on condition the applicants possess at least a credit in Bahasa Melayu.
