Minister sees red over volleyball coach slapping teen athletes

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh is outraged over claims that a volleyball coach slapped two of his teenage players.

In a Twitter post, she said more information was being sought regarding the incident, alongside Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.

In a livestream by Malaysia Volleyball Association (Mava) on Dec 16, a man is seen slapping two teenage girls.

The girls were part of the Malacca volleyball team at the 2022 Malaysia Youth U14 Volleyball Championship.

The assailant, wearing a red jersey that reads “Melaka Volleyball”, is believed to be the girls’ coach.

The incident took place as the Malacca team was trailing behind Johor, at 11 points, with the latter at 16 points.

The championships were held at SJK (C) Pei Hwa, Johor from Dec 14 to Dec 16.

In a statement tonight, MAVA said it had slapped the coach with a suspension pending a probe.

The association said it had set up an investigation team to probe the incident, and would not tolerate any use of violence or hesitate to take further action as per its constitution.
