Digital Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the ministry’s SMS broadcast will be reviewed so that only information of public interest and relevance is communicated.

The minister said that crucial messages and alerts, such as flood warnings, will still be sent nationwide, but there was a need to review the SOPs.

“We are obtaining information and conducting a review on the process of sending out messages (to the public),” he told Free Malaysia Today at an event today.

Fahmi (above) said realigning the SOPs will ensure that only important messages are broadcasted.

The ministry was recently criticised for disseminating messages praising the government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as a “solution based on the law and the Federal Constitution”, through its “GOV” SMS broadcast channel.

This was followed by another text message on Wednesday about the coalition government’s diversity.

Public service announcements about initiatives by ministries and government agencies are broadcast on the “GOV” broadcast channel.

During the pandemic, the then government used the channel to inform the general public about the moratorium on bank loans, different movement control orders, and scam alerts.
