Sembrong Umno demands explanation for Hishammuddin's suspension

The Sembrong Umno division has demanded an explanation from the party's supreme council over the suspension of its chief Hishammuddin Hussein for six years.

Deputy division chief Abd Ghani Abd Rashi said they were shocked by the party leadership’s decision, which they viewed as heavy-handed.

"It is as if punishing an individual who wanted to betray or destroy the party. But in fact, that did not happen... There was no consideration, no due process.

"I was made to understand that there was no show cause letter, no hearing by the disciplinary board, and of course the punishment did not take into consideration his deeds and sacrifices at various levels of the party leadership," he said during a press conference that was live streamed on Facebook today.

Hishammuddin was among several Umno leaders who were suspended on Friday over alleged disciplinary infractions.

Umno supreme council member Puad Zarkashi claimed the suspension was for Hishammuddin's attempts to get BN lawmakers to side with Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin during the race to form the government after the 15th general election.

BN ultimately sided with Pakatan Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim in the contest.

Meanwhile, on whether Hishammuddin should file an appeal - Abd Ghani said he left this decision to the Sembrong MP.

However, he said the Sembrong division wants the decision to be reviewed so that due process is followed.

In the meantime, the Sembrong Umno will heed Hishammuddin's advice and remain steadfast with the party, he added.
