Less than 5pct of Umno division polls faced issues - Zahid

No more than five percent of Umno divisions faced issues during their internal election, said party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said that overall the polls that took place yesterday, involving 189 divisions, ran smoothly.

The BN chairperson added that the Umno election committee will provide a detailed report of the two commotions that took place during the election.

“I personally believe in the authority of the JPU (election committee). Each division has a JPU representative, they monitor (the situation) and send a report to the central JPU for review and investigation. If the case needs to be referred to the disciplinary board, action will be taken.

“There has been no more than five percent of severe or mild cases (of issues with the results).

“Most of the complaints received have been resolved, they were eventually withdrawn and the decision was accepted,” he told reporters at Umno headquarters in Kuala Lumpur last night.

Fight breaks out

Earlier, the Lahad Datu Umno division representative meeting held at Dewan Sri Perdana in Lahad Datu was marred by a fight, believed to be caused by provocation.

Lahad Datu district police chief Rohan Shah Ahmad said that the incident took place at 2.45pm yesterday leaving a Sabah Umno Liaison staff member and a Lahad Datu Umno Youth committee member injured.

“The suspects involved in this commotion have been identified as two men aged 33 and 38, who are regular members of Lahad Datu Umno Division.

“The police will conduct an investigation under Section 15(3) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 and Section 323 of the Penal Code," he said in a statement last night.

Zahid said that he was satisfied with the election process, however further review was needed.

“We must be fair to each candidate and representative that attended because it totals around 160,000 (individuals).

“If there is anyone who is dissatisfied (with the election results), the party’s election committee helmed by Shahrir Samad will handle it,” he added.
