Former Umno Youth leader Khairul Azwan Harun has been appointed Halal Development Corporation (HDC) chairperson.

HDC announced the matter on its social media this morning and also congratulated the former senator, who is better known as Azwan Bro, on the appointment.

"Hopefully with Khairul Azwan's expertise, knowledge and experience, HDC governance can be strengthened and contributions can be made to increasing the competitiveness of the halal industry in Malaysia to a higher level," it said.

Established in September 2006, HDC is the main coordinator to encourage participation and facilitate the growth of industry players in the development of Malaysia's halal ecosystem.

HDC, which is the first government-supported halal industry development agency in the world, is under the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry.

During the 2022 general election, Khairul Azwan contested the Pasir Salak parliamentary seat under a BN ticket but lost to the Perikatan National candidate with a 5,003 majority.
