Muhyiddin: PN will win up to 80pct of votes in state polls

Perikatan Nasional (PN) is confident that it will get up to 80 percent of votes, especially from the Malay population, in the upcoming state elections.

PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin said the confidence was based on a study by the coalition which showed that Bersatu, Gerakan, and PAS are ahead in terms of popularity and leadership.

Speaking to reporters at the Pagoh Hari Raya Aidifiltri open house in Johor today, he added that the upcoming state elections will become a new benchmark regarding the future of Malaysia’s politics.

“I am confident, although it’s not 100 percent, but 70 to 80 percent of support from the people, especially from the Malays, is very good.

“Based on research, we can see the perception from each state such as Selangor, people seem to be moving forward,” the Pagoh MP said.

Muhyiddin also believed that support for PN will grow based on the current political situation with the coalition government.

“All of their (the government’s) actions are being evaluated by the people.

“The people are frustrated… they (the government) talk a lot but they don’t perform like how they talk,” the Bersatu president said.

On the other hand, Muhyiddin said he believes a lot of former Umno leaders no longer feel they have a position in Umno’s current political situation.

He said this when asked about rumours of former Umno members joining PN as the state polls loom.

“I usually don’t know for certain if any of them (former Umno leaders) have joined PAS, it all depends on whatever our colleagues decide.

“What I do know is that those who have joined PAS or Bersatu quietly… feel as though they do not have a place in Umno’s politics anymore.

“Maybe they want to move forward to the future of this country’s politics and they feel they can do it with PN,” Muhyiddin said.

Ex-Umno leaders joining PN

Earlier today, former Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa confirmed he submitted an application to join PAS.

He said the membership form to join the party was sent a few months ago and has not yet been approved by PAS.

This comes after it was reported that PN was expected to announce the admission of Annuar and more than 10 former Umno leaders to join the party.

PN deputy secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan also said former Umno Youth leader Khairy Jamaluddin was seen as showing interest in joining Bersatu.

He said this announcement of new PAS members is expected to be made at the end of this month.
