Zahid: Give govt chance to realise promised agendas

Umno has urged all quarters to give a chance to the coalition government to realise its promised agendas.

Its president, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, said the government has just been in place for about seven months, but there have been many voices criticising the administration for allegedly not living up to its pledges.

"In the seven months the Madani government has been in power, many quarters have alleged that pledges have not been kept.

"Please give a chance for this government to realise the promised and planned agendas with the support of civil servants, who are loyal to the government," Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister, said in his policy speech at the 2023 Umno general assembly at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur today.

Perikatan Nasional (PN) leaders have often criticised the government for not introducing any “game changer” policies and not fulfilling promises made to the people over the past seven months.

Meanwhile, Zahid also said the upcoming state polls in six states is also a prime platform to test this new cooperation and cultivate better understanding among the parties.

Umno has a huge responsibility in the state elections, as it will be tasked with garnering victory in the Malay belt of Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, Zahid said.

“If we truly want to see Islam and the Malays excel, unity in Putrajaya will strengthen the moderate and progressive Islamic Malay agenda,” he said.

The Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu state governments are currently led by PAS administrations.

Zahid said the reality of the current era of politics lies in the context of the unity government.

With the participation of 19 component parties, far more than the political cooperation of 1974, of course, things would be more complicated, he said.

However, he stressed that this diversity should be seen as a strength as they are working towards finding common ground.

“While we celebrate our differences and similarities, Umno will ensure that the strength which has been built will remain centred around the foundations of this country, and will become the bulwark of the country’s peace, harmony and stability.

“Moving forward, Umno which is now together (with others) in the government, has a big role to play,” the Bagan Datuk MP said.

One of the roles Umno has to play is to become the protector of the country’s foundations, so that the position of Islam, the Malays and Article 153 of the Federal Constitution will be upheld.
