M'sia strongly condemns Quran burning in Sweden - Zambry

Malaysia strongly condemns a decision by the Swedish authorities to approve the provocative act of burning the Holy Quran on June 28, 2023, in Stockholm, Sweden.

Foreign Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir (above) said on Twitter the decision by the Swedish court was not a progressive move in the efforts to enhance mutual respect and understanding for the betterment of humankind.

“The desecration of the Holy Book, while Muslims around the world are celebrating Eid Al-Adha, is very offensive to Muslims worldwide and violates the universal principle of respect and understanding towards all religions and their Holy Scriptures,” he said.

Malaysia also urged the Swedish government to stop allowing provocative acts of Quran burning, stating that such acts were clearly hate crimes and those who commit such acts should be held accountable for their actions.

Minister in Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Mohd Na’im Mokhtar said the Malaysian government was deeply concerned and outraged at the recurring decision to permit such despicable acts in the name of freedom of expression.

He said the country stood in solidarity with the affected community.

“The vile act of burning the Holy Quran outside a mosque in Stockholm on a significant day of joy, celebration, and unity for Muslims around the world is a clear manifestation of hatred, religious intolerance, and Islamophobia.

“Freedom of expression is a fundamental right, but it is essential to uphold this right within the boundaries of respect and responsibility.

“We call upon all parties to condemn this act of religious intolerance, stand together against hatred, and promote understanding, respect, and harmony among all members of our diverse society,” he said in a statement.
