Amirudin: Backlash will turn into wave of unity

STATE POLLS | Caretaker Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari has not discounted the possibility of a backlash from Pakatan Harapan supporters for the coalition's cooperation with BN.

However, if handled in the correct manner, Amirudin expressed confidence the dissatisfaction can be turned into a stronger wave of unity.

"What is certain is Harapan will continue campaigning with BN. We even did it yesterday," he said when met at the nomination centre at SMK Sungai Pusu in Gombak, this morning.

Asked about provocation by Perikatan Nasional supporters against Harapan and chants of “Hoi hoi ya hoi” from Altimet’s song Aduh Malaysia, Amirudin said mocking is normal during campaigning.

"It is normal. We can 'hoi ya hoi' back at them for Jana Wibawa (case)," he quipped.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim used the song throughout his campaigning during the 15th general election.

PN supporters taunted Harapan/BN supporters with the song during nomination in Gurun, Kedah, earlier today. A shouting match then erupted between the two groups.

Meanwhile, Selangor Umno chief Megat Zulkarnain Omardin, who is contesting in the Gombak Setia state seat, said he was willing to debate with any of his opponents.

"I'm okay (to engage) if there are offers to debate. I see it as a platform to tell the voters what we have to offer so that they can judge who they can vote for.

"We should stop seeing debating as a platform to criticise, shame or insult others. I support healthy political discourse."

Asked about the Gombak Setia seat, Megat Zulkarnain said everyone stood an equal chance of winning the state.
