Bombs under Siti Kasim's car real but switched off - police

The explosive devices found under lawyer-activist Siti Kasim's car recently were real bombs but not switched on, according to Kuala Lumpur police chief Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain.

He told a media conference today that the two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are believed to be the work of someone with bomb-making knowledge.

This was based on how the devices were constructed, where police found that they contain complete mechanisms that are needed for detonation.

"However, we found that the bombs were in 'switch-off' mode, and the devices had to be detonated manually by pressing a button on them. Other materials found in the bombs include cloth, diesel, wires, batteries, and fireworks.

"I believe the person behind this has the knowledge on building IED and we hope speculations on this case will stop here," he said, as reported by Malay-daily Kosmo!.

On July 21, Siti Kasim sent her car to a service centre in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, before a mechanic found suspicious objects attached to the undercarriage of the vehicle.

Police then deployed its bomb disposal unit and managed to remove the suspected bombs.

Shuhaily said that police have interviewed 13 individuals to facilitate investigation into the case.

They include Siti, her friends, the mechanic who found the devices, and security personnel at the residential area where Siti lives.

"We have checked all CCTV recordings related to the activist's (Siti Kasim) movement and are searching for more leads," he said.
