Jais probing Fahmi over speech in mosque

The Selangor Islamic Department (Jais) is investigating an incident in which Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil gave a speech in a mosque.

Selangor has a ban on politicking in mosques.

In a statement today, Jais director Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said the department had received complaints about Fahmi speaking at the Nurul Yaqin Mosque in Kampung Melayu Seri Kundang, Rawang on July 30.

Investigations are being carried out under Section 12 of the Selangor Syariah Crimes Enactment, on suspicion of insulting religious authorities.

He said the mosque’s official (nazir) has been called for questioning and that further investigations will be carried out.

He also warned that anyone violating Selangor’s ban on politicking at mosques and surau - as prohibited by the sultan - will face stern action.

Fahmi (above) addressed the matter on Twitter yesterday, explaining that he was asked by mosque congregants to explain the controversy surrounding British band The 1975.

“I had visited for Zohor (afternoon) prayers... as I was there I was invited by the congregation to explain on The 1975 issue.

“I did not touch on other matters at all,” he tweeted, adding that congregants can vouch for him.

The 1975 stirred controversy after two male band members kissed on stage at the Good Vibes Festival, after criticising the government for its anti-LGBT policies.

This led to Fahmi pulling the plug on the music festival, while the band has been banned from performing in the country.
