Zahid: BN to make way for Amanah in Pulai, Simpang Jeram

STATE POLLS | BN will make way for Pakatan Harapan through Amanah to defend Pulai parliamentary seat and Simpang Jeram state seat in Johor, in the by-elections to be held on Sept 9.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi reportedly said the move was done out of respect for Amanah's position as BN's new ally in government.

"We highly respect our togetherness with Amanah as a political partner in the unity government.

"We know Amanah as our ally has the right to (contest) the (Pulai) parliamentary seat," said Zahid as quoted by Utusan Malaysia.

"Secondly, the (Simpang Jeram) state seat also belongs to Amanah.

"So in the spirit of the Madani government, we will support both of the seats to be contested by Amanah," said Zahid after a function at Umno headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

Both the seats were declared vacant following the death of the incumbent Amanah deputy president, Salahuddin Ayub, on July 23.

Earlier today, the Election Commission set Aug 26 as the nomination date, early polling on Sept 5 and polling date on Sept 9.

In the last 15th general election, BN fielded its former Pulai MP Nur Jazlan Mohamed to reclaim the seat from Salahuddin, who won in 2018 - the first time Harapan had captured the seat.

Salahuddin also first won the Simpang Jeram state seat in GE14 and later defeated BN and PN candidates during the 2022 Johor state elections.
