Fact-check: Viral video of jetliner crash over homes not from Elmina

A video showing a large jetliner crashing over roofs of terrace homes is a computer-generated moving image (CGI), and not of the light aircraft crash in Elmina, Selangor, yesterday.

According to fact-checking outfit Faqcheck Lab, the CGI video was first uploaded to YouTube Shorts on June 9, 2023, more than two months ago.

The CGI video is circulating on messaging applications like WhatsApp among Malaysian users, with a caption claiming this was footage from the light aircraft crash yesterday.

The CGI video showed a large commercial jetliner with a US flag on its tail, while the aircraft in yesterday's incident was a Beechcraft Model 391 (Premier 1), Faqcheck Lab noted.

"We implore the public to not speculate or share unverified videos of the accident in order to minimise the spread of misinformation, and create further distress around the incident," it said.

The light business jet aircraft flying from Langkawi to the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang crashed at about 2.50pm yesterday, killing the six passengers and two crew on board, as well as a motorcyclist and a motorist on the ground.

Among those on board was Pahang exco member Johari Harun.
