Pelangai by-election on Oct 7

Polling day for the Pelangai state seat in Pahang has been set for Oct 7.

In announcing this, Election Commission chairperson Abdul Ghani Salleh said nomination will be held on Sept 23, which also marks the beginning of the election's 14-day campaign period.

Early voting has been set for Oct 3.

The Pelangai by-election was called following the death of its incumbent assemblyperson, Johari Harun.

The 53-year-old was among 10 killed in a flight crash at the City of Elmina near Shah Alam, Selangor on Aug 17.

Ghani said the EC will use the latest electoral roll, updated on Aug 17, for the by-election.

"It has a total of 16,456 voters - including 16,417 ordinary voters, 36 police officers and three overseas voters," he said in the EC’s Facebook livestream.

In the 2022 general election, Johari won the Pelangai state seat for BN after securing a total of 7,308 votes to defeat his contenders from Perikatan Nasional, Pakatan Harapan and Pejuang.

The polls saw BN and PN in a tie with 17 seats each, while Harapan won eight.

Following the results, BN and Harapan agreed to form a state government together.
