Umno to go solo at polls? Supreme council will decide, says youth chief

Whether or not Umno will contest solo at the polls will be decided by the party's supreme council, said its Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh.

He said this in response to Umno supreme council member Isham Jalil's proposal for the party to go solo in elections.

"There's a supreme council meeting tomorrow. Maybe that's Isham's personal opinion. All decisions are taken by the party's supreme council.

"So let's wait for tomorrow's meeting. If the proposal is agreed upon, then the decision will be such.

“But if it is rejected, then it is (Isham's) personal opinion," Akmal (above) told reporters after chairing the Umno Youth wing's exco meeting at Menara Dato Onn in Kuala Lumpur today.

Earlier, Isham said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had only ordered the formation of a government with Pakatan Harapan, but not to contest in elections as a coalition.

His statement was based on Umno’s dismal performance in the recent state elections, where it only won 19 of the 108 seats contested.

Following his vocal remark, Isham claimed that several party leaders, including himself, may be sacked in tomorrow's supreme council meeting.

Meanwhile, Akmal said Umno Youth will present the state elections' post-mortem findings in tomorrow's meeting.
