Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz was sworn in as a member of the Dewan Negara today.

He was nominated by the Kelantan state assembly earlier this month to fill in the vacancy left by Mohamad Affandi Mohamad, whose term ended on July 7.

The swearing-in ceremony took place before Senate president Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

Nik Abduh was a rising star in PAS until he failed to win a seat in the party’s central committee in 2021. He was later co-opted into the committee.

The 53-year-old is the son of former PAS spiritual leader and former Kelantan menteri besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

PAS’ decision not to field Nik Abduh during the 2022 parliamentary election and the Kelantan legislative assembly election on Aug 12 had sparked speculation that he was being sidelined.

Nik Abduh was elected Pasir Mas MP in 2013. Following this, he was elected as Bachok MP in 2018.

On Sept 6, he told reporters that allegations of being sidelined were untrue because he had voluntarily opted not to defend his seat to take care of personal affairs.

"So, there is no question of me being sidelined by the party leadership. That's just a story made by the media," Nik Abduh said.

Suhaizan Kayat

Meanwhile, newly elected Pulai MP Suhaizan Kayat was sworn in as a member of the Dewan Rakyat as well.

Suhaizan finally won an election during a by-election on Sept 9 after six tries in various constituencies.

He won with a very comfortable 61.55 percent of the vote share.
