Over 130 MPs demand release of Myanmar’s Suu Kyi

One hundred and thirty-five MPs from both sides of the political divide have called for the release of Myanmar’s deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

This comes after her son reportedly claimed that her health was deteriorating, struggling to eat and being refused permission to see an outside doctor.

In a joint statement today, the government and opposition MPs declared solidarity with the people of Myanmar and called for the release of Suu Kyi, who is being held under the military government.

“We, the MPs of Malaysia, also call upon Wisma Putra to engage with the National Unity Government of Myanmar, the rightful and democratically elected government, to advocate for the release of Suu Kyi.

“We urge the junta to release prominent political prisoner Suu Kyi and other political prisoners, and for Myanmar to enter a period of peace, stability and good governance, upholding the rule of law for all,” they said.

The Nobel laureate and figurehead of Myanmar's opposition has been detained since a coup early last year and has been sentenced to 17 years in prison.

The military overthrew Suu Kyi’s elected government in 2021 and cracked down on opponents of the military rule, with thousands jailed or killed.

Suu Kyi is still facing 27 years of detention, related to 14 alleged criminal offences.
