BN greases Pelangai folk with free oil change

PELANGAI BY-ELECTION | BN offered free oil changes for motorcyclists near one of their campaign offices last night.

The event took place in Kampung Shafie near Simpang Pelangai. At least 15 motorcyclists and their machines were in the queue when Malaysiakini visited the venue at about 9pm.

A man clad in a BN vest told Malaysiakini that 50 bottles of 4T motorcycle oil were prepared.

All recipients of the free motor oil expressed gratitude because they were able to save a bit of money.

Resident Mohd Razif Mohd Diah, 18, said he was happy to receive a free oil change for his Honda C70.

“Because if we want to buy a bottle of engine oil, there are the expensive types and the cheap ones.

“If we want good-quality oil, then we have to pay more. But the cheap one is also okay. My gratitude to the organiser for giving us this free oil,” he told Malaysiakini.

Asked about his voting preference in the by-election, Razif said he was not qualified to vote this round because he had just turned 18. The Election Commission’s voter list used for this election was last updated in May.

Retiree Shaharuddin Mohd Dahalan, 62, said he usually changes his Honda EX5’s engine oil every three or four months, spending at least RM15 each time.

“I am happy with their efforts. It’s rare to get such an opportunity, and I appreciate such a chance every once in a while,” he said.

According to a school student - name withheld because he was a minor - the Castrol Activ Essential that was offered can cost up to RM20 at the nearby workshops.

He said the programme was very helpful, especially for a student like him.

“As a student, of course, I feel very happy to get engine oil for free.

“Because I change the engine oil for my Demak bike every month and spend about RM17 or RM18 each time.

“I made it a point to service my bike once a month after its engine broke down because I forgot to change its engine oil for quite some time,” he told Malaysiakini.

The programme last night was held at the Kampung Shafie BN operations centre, where its candidate Amizar Abu Adam had visited earlier in the evening before going for a walkabout.

It is believed that the programme was organised by the party election machinery to shore up support for the party.

Amizar was not present during the event but many individuals believed to be BN election workers were present and watched as three mechanics performed the oil change.

Giving gifts - even on someone’s behalf - is an election offence according to Section 10(c) of the Election Offences Act.
