Over 2k Umno members gather outside mosque, seek pardon for Najib

More than 2,000 Umno members gathered outside the Federal Territory Mosque in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon to call for former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak to be granted a royal pardon.

The group, comprising the party's youth wing and student movement, was led by Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh.

"Justice for Najib was denied after his change of lawyer, and he was not given time by the Federal Court to submit his appeal.

"How could others get (to submit their appeals) but Najib was not allowed to do so?" Akmal asked during the rally.

The protesters were all reportedly clad in white T-shirts bearing the slogan “Pulangkan Najib” (Return Najib) and chanted the slogan in support of the former Umno president.

According to Akmal, a petition calling for Najib's pardon has received more than a million signatures so far.

He also said that they are awaiting a date from Istana Negara to submit the said petition.

The police were on standby to ensure the situation remained under control, and the protest ended quickly without incident.

Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported that a movement is underway to collect undergraduates' signatures to support a petition to free Najib.

Najib is currently serving a 12-year jail sentence after conviction in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case.

Umno has made concerted efforts to free Najib, including applying for a royal pardon for the former Pekan MP.
