Muhyiddin: Bersatu 'defections' planned to weaken party, PN

There are concerted efforts to weaken Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional by bribing and threatening their lawmakers, the coalition's chief Muhyiddin Yassin has alleged.

According to him, the Bersatu supreme council will hold an emergency meeting tonight to discuss the spate of PN MPs who have pledged to support Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

"The act of two more Bersatu MPs voicing support for the prime minister goes against the party's position.

"It is a serious violation of party discipline, which also goes against the mandate given by the rakyat who chose them (the lawmakers) based on the trust in PN principles," Muhyiddin said in a statement posted on Facebook today.

Muhyiddin was commenting on four Bersatu MPs pledging their support for Anwar's leadership, citing the wellbeing of their constituents, in the last month.

The four are Jeli MP Zahari Kechik, Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), and Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang).

Iskandar and Suhaili have since been suspended from Bersatu for four years and six years, respectively, by the Bersatu disciplinary board.

‘Evil alliance’

Elaborating, Muhyiddin said the Bersatu supreme council will hold an emergency meeting tonight to discuss the latest developments.

"I received information that there are concerted efforts from the opposing party (government) to weaken Bersatu and PN, by using bribes and threats against its MPs.

"Bersatu will not bow down to this 'evil alliance' and stricter action will be taken. I urge all Bersatu members to remain calm and steadfast in upholding the party's principles while the party's leadership handles this issue."
