Toll-free highways this weekend for Deepavali

Malaysians will get to enjoy toll-free travel on all highways nationwide this weekend in conjunction with the Deepavali festivities.

This was announced by Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi in a statement this morning.

According to the minister, the toll-free highway will apply to all types of vehicles beginning 12.01am on Nov 11 until 11.59pm on Nov 12.

However, the toll-free initiative does not apply to two highways at the country's border with Singapore, namely the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar and Tanjung Kupang toll plazas in Johor.

"The initiative is carried out (so that) all Malaysians can celebrate, especially the Indian community who observe Deepavali.

"This is also in line with the Madani government's aspiration to alleviate the people's burden," said Alexander.

According to him, around 11.8 million vehicles are expected to ply the roads on the two days.

He urged motorists to follow the travel time advisory provided by highway concessionaires to avoid getting stuck in traffic gridlock.

"Always abide by safety rules so that all motorists can reach their respective destinations safely, and celebrate the holidays with their loved ones.

"The Works Ministry wishes all Malaysians a Happy Deepavali."
