Raub MP Chow Yu Hui wants Umno Youth leader Dr Akmal Saleh to apologise to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming for playing up negative sentiments over the latter's proposal to get Chinese new villages listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site.
He also suggested that the party's supreme council should take action against Akmal over his offer to school Nga on Malay history.
Chow said that the party's accusation - that the proposal would challenge the current status of bumiputeras - was baseless and irresponsible.
On Feb 1, Nga said that plans were being drawn up to recognise Chinese new villages for their cultural and historical value.
Chow added that Akmal’s action has harmed the relationship between Umno and DAP in the coalition government.
He also said that by being conservative, such action would not be able to attract voters supporting Perikatan Nasional and lead Umno to lose more non-Malay votes.
“It should be remembered that Chinese new villages gave 95 percent support to Umno, which led them to win the Pelangai by-election,” he added.
He questioned if the Unesco status given to Georgetown in Penang, and Malacca had changed the status of the bumiputera and affected inter-racial relations in the area.
Chow further stated that Nga had welcomed the proposal to apply for Unesco status Malay villages that meet the requirements as well.
However, Chow said, the proposal doesn’t automatically make Chinese new villages a Unesco site, as the agency will make a thorough review before approving the proposal.
“If the application is approved, it shows an important historical value and Umno does not need to oppose it strongly,” he said.
Chow also emphasised the importance of diversity which led the direction of the Madani government and called Umno to avoid racial politics.

UMNO doing itself a disservice by allowing loudmouth Akmal to shoot off his mouth over every little thing deemed as " sensitive".He has never accepted DAP and never will, having him in the coalition is like having a trojan horse in the camp. His hostility is so palpable, how can there ever be unity with this idiot around? Zahid is obviously unable to control him!
What is wrong with the Malaysia of today? We have so many intelligent and good people but of late they have chosen to remain silent and extremists and racist opportunists abound shouting the loudest. First to be a UNESCO site it must have merit. It is not a situation like one where you can award it yourself like some university does with PHDs on made up history to glorify one with fiction or fictional hit movies. Second non-Malays are also Malaysians and are a fabric of Malaysian society. So anything that promotes their culture or contribution to what is good about Malaysia today whether food business arts and sciences is also good for other Malaysians of other ethnicities. They bring glory to the nation. They shine a positive light on the country and hence helps bring in investments and widens the space of other Malaysians in the world. Third if these new villages specifically do get UNESCO status that is a WIN - WIN for all Malaysia. Think of the spin offs in terms of businesses from tourism and all the tax revenues. Most civil servants are Malays, most transport operators are Malay, most banks are Malay owned/controlled. These are direct beneficiaries of tourism. How is this bad? Fourth the objection that this is Tanah Melayu also makes no sense as a basis to question New Villages getting UNESCO status. How is this even logical. Does that mean that anything that promotes other cultures in Malaysia is against Tanah Melayu and who is the person that decides this. Does that mean that anything found pre Islam in the 14th century is not part of Tanah Melayu? The ancestors of the current Malays today around the time of Parameswara the founder of Malacca are not Malays? All the Hindu and Buddhist artifacts no matter how old or significant are to be ignored and any promotion of it threatens Malay Muslim identity. Is this not self defeating when Malays have a history to be proud off. Yes much of it pre-Islam but are we as Malaysians content to ignore this rich history too? Fifth this objection is also oppressive to non Malay Muslims because potentially any celebration of their culture or history is said to question "Malay- Muslim right". Would trying to get into Guiness book of world records for longest yu sheng or biggest Thaipusam procession be a problem too? Sixth nothing stops UMNO and PN being the so-called defenders of Malay rights from also asking for Kampong Baru etc to be made UNESCO sites. Why not focus on something like this. Odd that for 70 years these defenders who claim to have Malay interests at heart have been so lazy or different to think of ways to enhance Malay culture and pride and just because you have not done so you want to stop others. I suppose from a point of view of politics it makes sense to object to this current proposal because it makes you look bad by comparison what the DAP is trying to do with 1 year in office which you did not for the decades you ran the ministry, Jealousy I assume plays a big part. However sadly sometimes politics needs to take a back seat for the good of the nation.
Nilai-nilai sejarah dan fakta sebenar Kampung Baru Cina. 1# Kampung Baru Cina bukan 100% penghuni-penghuni Cina.
