PN names Bersatu division chief as KKB candidate

Hulu Selangor Bersatu acting chief Khairul Azhari Saut has been named as Perikatan Nasional’s candidate for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

The announcement was made by PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin during an event held at Bandar Utama Batang Kali in Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor, earlier tonight.

Khairul Azhari (above, right) will be facing Pakatan Harapan’s Pang Sock Tao, who is an aide to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming.

Besides PN and Harapan, Muda and PSM have also expressed interest in the by-election but have yet to decide whether they will field a candidate.

Khairul Azhari took over the Bersatu division leadership after its incumbent chief Md Anuar Mohd Nor quit the party in an act of protest during the Selangor state election last year.

The announcement ended speculations that Gerakan will put forward a candidate to represent PN.

This comes after Gerakan president Dominic Lau said last week that his party was interested in contesting in the polls.

It was also speculated that Gerakan intended to field Muniraa Abu Bakar, who was defeated in the contest for the Bukit Lanjan seat by a Pakatan Harapan candidate in last year’s state election.

Kuala Kubu Baharu is a mixed state constituency comprising 49.3 percent Malay voters, 30.6 percent Chinese, 17.9 percent Indians, and 2.1 percent others.

The by-election, scheduled for May 11, was called following the death of Lee Kee Hiong (Harapan/DAP), who held the seat since 2013.
