The suspect killed in the attack on the Ulu Tiram police station yesterday, was believed to have acted alone, said Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

He said the action of the 21-year-old local man was not linked to a group, as police initially concluded after interviewing 46 individuals to facilitate the investigation.

“At this preliminary stage, we found the suspect acted alone, we call it ‘lone wolf’, he is (believed) driven by certain motivation as it was found that he does not mix with other people,” he told a press conference at the Johor police contingent headquarters in Johor Bahru today.

Also present was Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain.

In the 2.45am attack yesterday, three were killed - two police officers Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, and Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24, and the 21-year-old suspect.

Another police personnel, Mohd Hasif Roslan was also injured in the incident and is reported to be in stable condition at Sultan Ismail Hospital.

The suspect killed in the incident is believed to be a member of Jemaah Islamiyah and an investigation at the suspect’s house in Ulu Tiram led to the arrest of five members of his family, aged 19 to 62.

The police have obtained an order to remand the five family members for investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Funeral prayer

Saifuddin said the remains of Azza and Syafiq will be taken to Tunku Laksamana Abdul Jalil Mosque, Johor police contingent headquarters for the funeral prayers and last respects.

After that, the bodies of the two police officers would be taken to their hometowns in Bidor, Perak and Kuantan, Pahang, to be buried.

As for the family of the police personnel injured in the attack, Saifuddin said he would ensure that the welfare of the family would be looked into.

Earlier, he visited the Ulu Tiram police station, where the attack occurred. Mohd Khairul Azhar Abbi Paisa, who was at the scene then, told him what happened.

The minister also attended the funeral prayer for the two officers killed in the attack.
