BDS Malaysia condemns ‘foolish’ acts of vandalism

Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions for Malaysia (BDS Malaysia) has condemned a series of recent vandalism cases sparked by Israel’s genocide of Palestinian civilians in Gaza as “misguided, foolish and criminal” acts.

BDS Malaysia in a statement stressed that a just and noble cause, such as ending the Zionist occupation of Palestine, does not require criminal acts to gain support in the hearts and minds of the public.

The pressure group also referred to news reports that Selangor police have recorded seven cases of fast-food restaurants being defaced with boycott-related graffiti.

“The intense emotions caused by the ongoing genocide should be expressed through creative and lawful actions which will advance the Palestinian struggle for freedom and justice.

“The BDS movement is rooted in principles of justice and human rights to pressure Israel to comply with international law through peaceful and lawful means,” said BDS Malaysia.

“Acts of vandalism undermine our cause and distract from our global community’s legitimate and principled efforts,” it said.

As such, BDS Malaysia urged all Malaysians to exercise their constitutional right to boycott companies and brands listed on the pressure group’s official list without engaging in destructive or abusive actions towards any person or property.

“This is in line with our established policy of non-violence and peaceful action,” said the group.

On April 19, several Starbucks and McDonald’s premises in Tawau, Sabah got vandalised, according to Harian Express.

On April 24, proponents of a boycott campaign against Israel-linked entities also vandalised a McDonald’s billboard in Sungai Petani, Kedah.

The signboard - announcing an upcoming McDonald’s drive-through facility in the district - was found spray-painted with the words “Boikot Pembunuh” (boycott murderers) and “Darah Palestin di tangan kamu” (you have Palestinian blood in your hands).

Yesterday, McDonald’s Malaysia also decried acts of vandalism targeting its assets, stating that such actions caused significant harm and distress to its crew members and the surrounding community.
