PAS to contest Sungai Bakap by-election

Perikatan Nasional will maintain Sungai Bakap as a PAS seat for the upcoming by-election.

Its chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin stated this is as the seat was previously contested by the Islamist party.

“Previously, PAS contested for this seat, it is a PAS seat and we will retain it for PAS.

“So, PAS will nominate the candidate who will contest there and for us, that is PN’s candidate,” he said in a press conference after chairing a PN supreme council meeting in Kuala Lumpur late last night.

Commenting further, Muhyiddin, who is also the Bersatu president, said PAS would announce its candidate on June 15.

The Sungai Bakap state seat in Penang fell vacant following the death of its incumbent Nor Zamri Latiff on May 24 due to stomach inflammation.

In the state election last August, the PAS Nibong Tebal chief won the seat with 52.7 percent of votes in a straight fight against Pakatan Harapan.

Nomination day for the by-election is June 22 with polling on July 6.

Amending PN constitution

In another development, Muhyiddin said PN will be amending its constitution to form the PN presidential council.

The Pagoh MP said the establishment of the PN presidential council is to empower the presidents of its component parties to make decisions on policy matters and discuss seat distribution in elections.

“We decided to amend the PN constitution tonight by adding provisions to form the presidential council to give authority to the top leaders, namely the party presidents, to discuss and decide on policy matters referred to the presidential council.

“Secondly, matters that may relate to seat distribution or changes in seat distribution will also be referred to the presidential council,” he said last night.

Additionally, he said the presidential council would also be given the authority to make decisions regarding disciplinary issues involving the component parties.
