Former teacher to represent PKR in Sg Bakap

PKR will be represented by former teacher Joohari Ariffin in the upcoming Sungai Bakap by-election.

“His last position was the director of the Aminuddin Baki Institute’s north branch,” said PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli during a ceramah at Bandar Tasek Mutiara in Seberang Perai, Penang.

He said Joohari fulfils the qualifications of being local, intelligent, and able to bear the burden of becoming a people’s representative who can nurture residents.

Joohari spent most of his early years in mainland Penang, being born in Permatang Pasir on July 17, 1964, and completing his primary education in Sungai Bakap.

He holds a degree in economics and Islamic studies from Universiti Malaya and a doctorate from Universiti Sains Malaysia.

In his speech, Johaari said he looks forward to serving the multiethnic community of Sungai Bakap.

“My hope when it was decided that I would be the Sungai Bakap candidate was that, god willing, I want to maintain my image as an educator, as a teacher,” he said.

Rafizi jokingly said the candidate was not a “walaun”.

Polling date for the by-election is on July 6 and is estimated to cost RM2.1 million, according to Election Commission deputy chairperson Azmi Sharom.

On Tuesday, June 11, the government appointed Rafizi and Umno supreme council member Zambry Abdul Kadir to lead the campaign for the Sungai Bakap by-election.

Perikatan Nasional will announce its candidate on June 16, said PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man as quoted by Bernama.

The by-election is being called following the death of incumbent assemblyperson Nor Zamri Latiff on May 24, after being admitted to the hospital for stomach inflammation.

During last year’s state election, Zamri, who was also the Nibong Tebal PAS division chief, defeated Penang PKR Women chief Nurhidayah Che Rose with a majority of 1,563 votes.


Before that, PKR held the seat for three terms, from 2008 to 2018.
