BN names Zambry as Sg Bakap election director

BN secretary-general Zambry Abdul Kadir will be leading the coalition as election director in the upcoming Sungai Bakap by-election, to assist Pakatan Harapan candidate Joohari Ariffin.

The decision was reached at an Umno supreme council meeting chaired by party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, according to party secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki in a statement tonight.

Penang Umno chief and party veteran Musa Sheikh Fadzir has been named election operation director, while Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan is tasked with leading the party’s war room.

“Umno will mobilise all of the party’s machinery to assist the unity government’s candidate in the N20 Sungai Bakap by-election,” said Asyraf.

Ahead of nomination day on Saturday, BN-Harapan announced Joohari from PKR as their candidate, while Perikatan Nasional named Nibong Tebal PAS deputy chief Abidin Ismail.

Joohari began his career as a teacher and retired from public service on Sept 1, 2023, while Abidin works in logistics and was an assistant to the late Sungai Bakap seat holder, Nor Zamri Latiff, also from PAS.

The Election Commission has set July 6 for polling, June 22 as the nomination day and July 2 for early voting.

The Sungai Bakap seat, with 39,279 voters comprising 39,222 ordinary electors and 57 police officers, fell vacant following the death of its incumbent Zamri from PAS on May 24 due to stomach inflammation.

In the last state election, Zamri, who was the Nibong Tebal PAS chief, defeated Harapan candidate Nurhidayah Che Rose with a majority of 1,563 votes.
