Sexual harassment against journo: Cops say probe in final stages

SG BAKAP BY-ELECTION | The investigation into the case of a journalist who was allegedly sexually harassed while covering Pakatan Harapan’s campaign event in Sungai Kecil, Penang on Wednesday night, is in its final stages, said the police.

Penang police chief Hamzah Ahmad said the suspect, believed to be a member of the Harapan media entourage, is observing a remand order.

“So at this time, we’re in the final stages of the investigation, and we need to complete the investigation before we forward our findings to the deputy public prosecutor,” he said.

When asked whether the remand will be extended, Hamzah said that depends on whether the investigation will conclude today.

The case is being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act.

Yesterday, Bernama reported the police as saying that the suspect turned himself in at the Seberang Perai Selatan police district headquarters and was remanded for two days to assist with the investigation.

Several media groups urged the authorities and the suspect’s employer to take stern action, while Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail assured a thorough police investigation.

Fahmi condemns incident

In a separate statement, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil condemned the incident.

“The perpetrators must be brought to justice immediately. Such incidents should never happen at all,” he said.

He said he has received further information on the incident from the journalist involved, and thanked the police for assuring a thorough and transparent investigation.
