I don't want to lie to voters anymore, says Rembia rep

Rembia assemblyperson Muhammad Jailani Khamis defected from the Malacca government because of his unwillingness to lie to voters.

Jailani accused the state administration, led by Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh, of breaking the promises made to the people in the 2021 Malacca state election manifesto.

“Especially since the Malays gave their votes to us based on the premise of no cooperation with Pakatan Harapan or Perikatan Nasional at that time. 

“My colleagues and I were also promised that Umno and BN would stand alone whatever happens. So, we would be an honourable opposition. No Anwar, no DAP,” he said.

On July 16, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan announced that Jailani, who was suspended from Umno for six years, had joined the Islamist party.

‘Not affected’ by anti-hopping law

Jailani was suspended from Umno after he was seen attending a high-profile PN event in Johor in September 2023.

Takiyuddin said Jailani submitted his application to join PAS on June 10, 2023, which was accepted on the same day.

He also claimed that this wouldn’t affect Jailani’s position as an assemblyperson because Malacca had yet to enforce the anti-hopping law when Jailani joined the party.

The Rembia assemblyperson’s statement came after Rauf announced that the state had suspended the latter’s allocation and that the Umno would serve a letter of demand to Jailani.

Responding to the claim, Jailani said he would comment when the time comes. He added that the government acts based on Harapan’s wishes, which themselves broke their manifesto promises.

“When promises are broken, have the people’s lives improved? We all know the answer. Let’s not deceive ourselves,” he added.

Umno to take legal action

Meanwhile, Sinar Harian reported Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan as saying that the party is ready to take legal action against Jailani.

This includes making him pay RM100 million for breaching the agreement and pledge signed by all BN candidates ahead of the Malacca state election and the 15th general election.

In the Malacca state election, BN won 21 out of the 28 contested seats. Harapan secured five, while Bersatu held two seats for PN.

Of the 21 seats won by BN, Umno holds 18 seats, followed by MCA with two, and MIC with one.
