M'sia considering evacuation if Bangladesh riots escalate

The Malaysian High Commission in Dhaka is considering all available options, including evacuation if necessary, given the rising tensions in Bangladesh.

The Foreign Ministry has emphasised that the safety of Malaysians abroad is its priority.

“As such, Malaysian students affected by the current situation have been relocated to the High Commission building for their safety.

“The ministry understands the concerns of Malaysians regarding the safety of their family members in Bangladesh.

“The ministry and High Commission request all Malaysian students to remain in contact and cooperate with the High Commission,” it said in a statement.

Bangladesh extended a curfew today to control violent student-led protests that have killed at least 114 people, as authorities braced for a Supreme Court hearing later in the day over government job quotas that have sparked anger.

Soldiers have been on patrol on the streets of the capital, the centre of the demonstrations that spiralled into clashes between protesters and security forces.

Internet and text message services in Bangladesh have been suspended since Thursday, cutting the nation off as police cracked down on protesters who defied a ban on public gatherings.

“Malaysians are also advised to be cautious of individuals promising assistance in evacuating Malaysians from Bangladesh.

“The Foreign Ministry urges all Malaysians in Bangladesh to avoid protest areas, remain vigilant, and adhere to the instructions of local authorities, including any curfew that may be in place,” it added.
