Umno 'conflicted' about working with Harapan, PAS leader alleges

Umno is “conflicted” about working with Pakatan Harapan in the government, claimed PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari.

He alleged that some Umno leaders who met PAS over several meetings said this.

“Umno feels ‘conflicted’ because they will be etched in history as the ones who supported Harapan to attain power.

“Several top leaders (from Umno) also wish to renew ties with PAS but they dare not oppose the Umno president’s decisions,” Utusan Malaysia reported Fadhli (above) as saying.

However, the Pasir Mas MP did not mention the names of the Umno leaders.

On July 13, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan said the party may not work with Harapan to face the next general election.

The foreign minister added that the partnership with its former rival was only to form the government to administer the nation.

However, Mohamad’s statement seems to contradict party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s stand in June, where the latter indicated that the Umno-Harapan partnership would continue into the 16th general election.

Fadhli said many Umno leaders have realised Malays are not receptive to their ties with Harapan, which may cause the nationalist party to be rejected again in the next polls.

“And this can be seen when the Umno deputy president himself said that there is no guarantee the party will cooperate with anyone (for the general election),” he added.

No issues with Zahid but…

Fadhli said PAS has no problems with Zahid and the Islamist party is open to working with him.

“It’s not that we dislike the person (Zahid) but more of his attitude.

“If he decides to meet us at 12pm (on cooperating with us), we will open our doors by 10am itself.

“But if it goes on like this, Umno may only win Rembau and Bagan Datuk in the next polls due to the current political ecosystem,” the PAS leader added.
