M'sian students arrive at KLIA from Bangladesh

An aircraft carrying more than 120 Malaysian students that departed from Bangladesh earlier today touched down safely at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 2 around 5pm.

The students were evacuated from Bangladesh following deadly riots in the country over a controversial civil service hiring policy.

Family and friends waited patiently at the arrival hall, some were seen praying for their safety.

During a press conference, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail provided an update on the evacuation of Malaysians from Bangladesh amid ongoing unrest.

Saifuddin noted that some have opted to remain in Bangladesh, citing ongoing studies, employment commitments, or family ties.

“The Malaysian High Commission will continue to monitor their situation and maintain communication, prioritising their welfare and safety,” he said.

Yesterday, it was reported that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed his wish for Malaysian students to be repatriated home safely from Bangladesh due to the escalating tensions in the country.

Saifuddin urged those staying behind to remain in close contact with the High Commission and stay alert.

Before the large-scale evacuation, the High Commission assisted 19 students to return to Malaysia.

The minister also highlighted the psychological support provided to the evacuees.

“The Higher Education Ministry deployed psychological officers to facilitate communication with families and students,” he said.

He added that he observed the students to be in various states, some visibly in shock, and emphasised the crucial role of psychological support in addressing their trauma.
