Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunos failed in his final appeal to avoid paying RM300,000 in defamation damages to Seputeh MP Teresa Kok.

The Federal Court today denied his appeal leave application over his 2017 remark that raised claims that she abused funds from Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor (Yawas).

Kok’s counsel Sankara Nair confirmed the apex court ruling, adding that Jamal had already paid the judgment sum held in trust pending the appeal.

With today’s ruling, the sum can now be released to the DAP lawmaker.

“Now my client has instructed me to pursue Jamal for the payment of legal costs,” Sankara said when contacted this afternoon.

Teresa sued Jamal over his remark during a news conference on March 8, 2017.

The following month, the DAP lawmaker filed the lawsuit over the allegation that she had misused state government funds for herself.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court allowed her defamation action against him on July 26, 2022, and the Court of Appeal upheld this.
