Nenggiri polls: No early voting centre to open on Aug 13

No early voting centre will be opened for the Nenggiri state by-election as set by the Election Commission (EC) this Aug 13.

Nenggiri returning officer Nik Raisnan Daud, who confirmed this, said all the early voters in the by-election, comprising 14 police personnel, are voting as postal voters.

“There will be no early voting this Aug 13 for the Nenggiri by-election as all the early voters have applied for postal voting,” he said when contacted by Bernama today. 

Nik Raisnan said the postal votes should be received by the EC before 4pm on polling day, which is Aug 17.

The Nenggiri by-election is being called after the Kelantan assembly speaker was informed that its representative, Mohd Azizi Abu Naim, had ceased to be a member of Bersatu on June 13.

Azizi, also the Gua Musang MP, was among the seven elected representatives dismissed from Bersatu for supporting the coalition government.

Tomorrow is nomination day for the by-election.

There are 20,259 eligible voters in the Nenggiri state constituency, comprising  20,245 ordinary voters and 14 police personnel.

Road closures

In another development, police said three main roads in this district will be temporarily closed tomorrow to facilitate the by-election nomination process at Kompleks Perdana, Gua Musang District Council.

Kelantan police chief Muhamad Zaki Harun said the road closures from 7am to 12pm will involve Jalan Persiaran Raya from the Mahkota Junction traffic lights to the Bendahara Junction traffic lights, in the direction of Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bahru.

He advised road users to plan their journeys well, identify the closed routes, and use alternative routes to avoid traffic congestion.

“All parties should cooperate and comply with the instructions issued by police officers on duty to ensure smooth traffic flow during the nomination process,” he said in a statement today.

Zaki said 579 police personnel would be deployed to ensure the smooth running of the nomination process.

“Police would like to remind all candidates to comply with all laws and not commit offences that could disrupt the nomination process.

“Candidates and their representatives are required to control the emotions of their supporters to prevent any provocation towards supporters of other parties. They are also prohibited from holding parades or vehicle convoys to showcase party strength,” he said. 

He said 995 police officers and personnel will be deployed to maintain public order in the Gua Musang district during polling day on Aug 17.

Zaki said the public cannot fly drones without approval throughout the by-election period.

He said this includes key locations such as the nomination centre, polling stations and other premises involved in the election process.

“All drone operations in this country are subject to Section 4, Civil Aviation Act 1969 (Act 3), Regulation 98 and Regulations 104-144 of the Civil Aviation Regulations Malaysia and Civil Aviation Directives," he said.
