Group urges pressure against Israel agent in Capt America movie

Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) Malaysia has urged increased public pressure against a character in the fourth and latest Captain America movie to be released next year.

The group on Instagram urged pressure against Marvel Studios and parent company Walt Disney Studios to remove Ruth Bat-Seraph from the Captain America: Brave New World movie.

The character, known by her alter ego Sabra, was depicted in the comics as an agent for Mossad, Israel’s intelligence organisation, as well as a police officer in Tel Aviv.

BDS Malaysia highlighted a boycott campaign by Palestinian groups which has resulted in certain changes introduced to the character’s background in the movie.

“We have together won an important partial victory.

“However, by retaining the character Ruth Bat-Seraph in the movie, Disney and Marvel are still colluding in glorifying Israel’s genocide and apartheid against Palestinians.

“We must escalate our pressure until the character is dropped,” said the group.

According to an official press release, Ruth Bat-Seraph played by Israeli actress Shira Haas is now a high-ranking US government official - unlike her original depiction in comic books first introduced in the 1980s.

Pro-Palestinian activists reportedly initiated pressure campaigns in 2022 when Bat-Seraph’s role in the next Captain America film was first publicised.

BDS Malaysia’s renewed call for a boycott of Marvel and Disney comes as the latest death toll of Palestinians in Gaza reached over 40,000 people including 16,000 children since last October.
