PAS leader: Absent 'big brother' DAP will still shatter Umno's dream

NENGGIRI BY-ELECTION | Although DAP is absent in Nenggiri, a PAS leader, however, believes it does not have to be physically present to shatter Umno’s dream of using the by-election to rejuvenate its support in Kelantan.

According to Perak PAS commissioner Razman Zakaria, this will remain a “dream” as long as BN is in bed with the “DAP-led” Pakatan Harapan coalition.

“Despite DAP not being present in Nenggiri, Umno-Zahid (Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) cannot deny that their candidate is a candidate of the Madani government, in which DAP is the big brother,” he said.

Razman said this would be one of the factors to determine who the voters in Nenggiri would elect as their next assemblyperson.

“In a land where the majority are Malays, there is no room for those who fail to defend the welfare of the people and Malay rights,” he was quoted as saying by Harakah Online.

Umno’s insistence that DAP sits out of the polls has also irked Kelantan DAP, whose chief Azha Abdul Rani told members and supporters to vote according to their conscience.

PAS and even Umno, before forming an alliance with Harapan, have often accused DAP of wanting to undermine the position of the Malays and Islam.

DAP leaders have repeatedly denied these accusations and affirmed the party’s commitment to upholding the Federal Constitution.

In a bid to dilute the perception of a DAP-controlled government, political analysts have also pointed out that the party opted to assume a subsidiary role in terms of ministerial positions despite having the most number of parliamentary seats compared to its partners.

Rakyat tired of ’nightmare’

Razman claimed the people were “fed up” with the Madani government.

“The increase of prices, the abolishing subsidies, the curbing of freedom of expression and other forms of oppression have created a nightmare for the people, including those in Nenggiri,” he said.

The Aug 17 by-election will witness a straight fight between BN’s Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani and Perikatan Nasional’s Mohd Rizwadi Ismail.

The by-election is being held following the vacancy announcement by Kelantan assembly speaker Amar Nik Abdullah on June 19 after receiving notice that its former assemblyperson Mohd Azizi Abu Naim, who won the seat in the last state election, had ceased to be a member of Bersatu.
