‘Choose rep who links people with federal govt’

5.17pm: Nenggiri needs a representative who can be a bridge between the people and the federal government so that all issues of basic infrastructure and public amenities in the area can be managed more efficiently.

Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan says this is considering the large size of the state constituency which still has a lot of room for improvement in terms of the basic facilities for the residents.

"The Kelantan PAS government doesn't have enough money to build big roads, big bridges, street lights, clinics, hospitals and so on, that's why it's our job (the central government) to make sure it's implemented.

"Therefore, our representative Awie (Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani) has decided to ensure that the central government project is implemented properly," Bernama reports him as saying after spending almost an hour chatting with residents at the Kampung Kuala Sungai voting district centre today.

Azmawi can become 'bridge' to Putrajaya - Zahid

12.30pm: BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi urges Nenggiri voters to cast their ballots for BN candidate Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani so that the latter can function as a "bridge" to the federal government.

"You have to ensure Awie (Azmawi) wins so he can be the bridge to the (federal) government," the Umno president says in a speech at Kampung Limau Kasturi in Gua Musang.

Should Azmawi win in next Saturday's by-election, Nenggiri will become the federal government's subject of focus, Zahid assures.

Zahid says he is also confident of Azmawi's ability to win votes on polling day.

‘Pay no heed to PAS’ political fatwa’

11.30am: Amanah president Mohamad Sabu urges Nenggiri voters not to be influenced by PAS’ political rhetoric and instead adhere to true religious principles.

He says the Islamist party labelling DAP as “kafir harbi” (non-Muslims who oppose Islam) during the campaign could change over time, noting that PAS had sung a different tune when it was in the same coalition as DAP, Bernama reports.

“In two general elections - 2008 and 2013 - we were with PAS and DAP. Lim Guan Eng (then DAP secretary-general) was even praised as being like the caliph Umar Abdul Aziz.

“In 2008, many DAP women wore (former PAS leader) Nik Abdul Aziz (Nik Mat) shirts, and many PAS leaders wore ‘rocket’ shirts and caps. At that time, there were no issues.

“Then in 2015, they parted ways with DAP and PKR. Maybe next year, they’ll say that being friends with DAP is a blessing from Allah,” he says in jest at a ceramah in Sungai Asap last night.

Amanah has mobilised its machinery from across the country to support the BN candidate’s by-election campaign.

ATM nothing to do with polls - Ahmad Jazlan

10.30am: Kelantan Umno denies claims that the announcement for Nenggiri to get an ATM is a ploy to fish for votes ahead of the by-election.

According to state party chief Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub, BN candidate Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani had been trying to secure ATM services for the constituency long before the by-election was announced.

“The call for ATM services has nothing to do with the by-election. Azmawi is merely speaking on behalf of the people as a Nenggiri local, not as an assemblyperson,” Jazlan tells the media in Gua Musang.

He is responding to Bersatu vice-president Mohd Radzi Md Jidin mocking the Finance Ministry’s announcement about ATM services in Nenggiri as a historic first.

On Saturday, the ministry said it had completed discussions with several local banks to provide ATM services in Nenggiri and the response was positive.

Previously, it was reported that villagers had to travel some 50km to Gua Musang to use an ATM. Some are even forced to take an hour-long train ride or a 30-minute boat trip.
