Rembia rep yet to prove joining PAS last year - Ab Rauf

UMNO AGM | Rembia assemblyperson Muhammad Jailani Khamis has yet to show proof for his claim of joining PAS since June 10 last year.

Malacca Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh said the status of the Rembia representative would be decided at the upcoming state assembly sitting in November after he has submitted the required evidence as requested by the assembly speaker.

“The state assembly secretary, through the assembly’s speaker, has told the Rembia assemblyperson to submit an official letter and PAS membership certificate to the speaker's office, with the deadline having passed on July 28.

“To date, we have not received any official letters from the Rembia assemblyperson," Rauf (above) said during a press conference at the World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur this evening.

On July 16, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan announced that Jailani had officially become a PAS member.

According to Takiyuddin, Jailani’s entry into PAS would not affect his status as an assemblyperson, who was previously suspended from Umno.

This is because Malacca had yet to enact its anti-hopping law when Jailani’s membership application was supposedly accepted.

On the same day of Takiyuddin’s announcement, Malacca state assembly speaker Ibrahim Durum was reported as saying that his office had yet to receive any official correspondence from the assemblyperson regarding his membership in PAS.

Ibrahim stated that he would wait for the official letter before taking any further action.

Ab Rauf further said Jailani must respond to the letter before the state assembly sitting begins to enable a decision regarding his status in the assembly.

“We are waiting for the state assembly sitting... we have also sent a letter to PAS seeking confirmation," he added.

‘Umno Youth can say whatever they want’

On a separate issue, Rauf was also asked about the statement made by Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, who said the party is prepared to go solo in the 16th general election if it aligns with the party's objectives.

In response, Rauf said Umno Youth is entitled to express its views, but the final decision rests with the Umno supreme council.

“Throughout every general assembly, the youth wing has always been a pressure group, so they can speak, they can express their opinions, but at the end of the day, it's not their decision.

“The decision will be made by the supreme council, which will assess various aspects of the party's strength in the formulations that will be decided in the supreme council meeting.

“Youth can say anything, no problem,” he added.
